Description

This programme aims to produce finance and accounting professionals with technical and professional competences required to manage and support moden finance and acounting systems. Participants of this programme will study modules that include Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Financial Strategy, Economics, Practice of Risk Management, Corporate Strategy, and Strategic Human Resource Management amongst others. The generic skills in analysis and problem solving, augmented by understanding of business finance and accounting better places graduates of this programme to enter sectors that include Retail, IT, Sales, Insurance, Banking and Risk management, Financial Consultancy and many others. Therefore graduates will be suited to work as Strategic Human Resource Management, Public Finance, and Public Sector Accounting, amongst others.

Target Group: The target audience for this programme is people who intend to pursue a career in finance and accounting and people who are already practitioners but without requisite degree qualification and wish to climb the corporate ladder in thier profession. This programme is also a route for people who wish to become members of professional accounting such as BICA, ACCA, CIMA etc.

Entry Requirements: The normal entry requirement into this programme shall be; BGCSE or equivalent with 36 points (best 6 subjects), including Credit in Mathematics and Pass in English Or an assessed equivalent entry qualification, which may include Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Learning Outcome of the Qualification

• Prepare and interpret financial statements.
• Analyse and evaluate financial statements and prepare annual tax returns in
line with applicable company’s act and income tax act.
• Evaluate the impact of the business environment in the financial management
of an entity.
• Demonstrate research and analytical skills by identifying and analysing critical
data in a given complex situation.
• Apply relevant management accounting techniques to aid decision making.
• Apply audit principles in conducting audit assignment.
• Apply advanced and critical financial management principles and techniques
to specific problems and situations.

Minimum requirements

• NCQF Level IV certificate or equivalent e.g. BGCSE with credit in Mathematics and pass in English.
• Certificate in Accounting and Business Studies or a related discipline from a recognized and accredited institution with a minimum five years’ working experience are admitted for entry at year 1.
• Diploma in Accounting and Business Studies/ Diploma in Public Sector Management /Recognized Accounting Technician Qualification or other recognized professional accounting qualifications from a recognized and accredited institution with a relevant working experience may be admitted for entry at year 3.
• Learners who do not meet the above requirements may be considered in terms of the institutions Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Regulations
• 1.5 International and local learners with non-Botswana qualifications should have their qualifications evaluated to determine their equivalence by BQA before admission into the programme. The qualifications must be similar or equivalent to the above admission requirements.

Formative assessment

• Modules shall be assessed by Course work, Research Project, internship and a
final examination paper for each of the courses studied.
• Course work component of the modules shall be assessed by continuous
assessment (CA). This totals 30% for the CA.
• There will be a mandatory examination at the end of semester which will contribute
to 50% of the final assessment grade.
• The Research Project/ Practicum will constitute 20% of the final mark. Candidates
will be required to undertake the research project or practicum for a full semester.
• Students who attain 40-49% shall supplement.
• Students who attain 39% and below shall be required to repeat.
• Students must achieve at least 50% in each of the modules a grade average of
50% or higher.
• Fundamental modules may be carried forward to be completed later when failed
instead of repeating a semester.

Summative assessment

• There will be formal examinations for all modules at the end of the academic year.
Theory papers will take hours of examination time and those that involve calculations
(Accounting, tax etc.) Hours.
The research project or practicum shall be assessed through submission of the
research report and presentation.

In the face of the declining job market, some graduates may consider self-employment as Tax, Finance or Accounting Consultants providing services in areas of tax, finance and accounting. Other graduates may join the academic world and conduct research on accounting and finance issues.
